- December was first the tenth month in the Roman calendar, and then the twelfth month in the Gregorian calendar. The word "December" is similarly spelled and/or pronounced in most languages, since observation of the month of December was mostly limited to the Western world at first. When the Gregorian calendar spread to other continents, most foreign languages adopted variations of the western word "December".
- Polish "Grudzień" seems to come from Proto-Slavic "gruda", which can mean a lump or clod, or a snowball - a lump of snow - so Grudzień would be the month when the ground is covered in lumps of snow.
- The Chinese, Korean, and Japanese words for December are all combinations of the respective language's words for "ten" and "two" (twelve) and "month".
